Controlling the delivery of multi-terawatt and petawatt laser pulses to final focus, both in position and angle, is critical to many laser applications such as optical guiding, laser–plasma acceleration, and laser-produced secondary radiation. We present an online, non-destructive laser diagnostic, capable of measuring the transverse position and pointing angle at focus. The diagnostic is based on a unique double-surface-coated wedged-mirror design for the final steering optic in the laser line, producing a witness beam highly correlated with the main beam. By propagating low-power kilohertz pulses to focus, we observed spectra of focus position and pointing angle fluctuations dominated by frequencies below 70 Hz. The setup was also used to characterize the excellent position and pointing angle correlation of the 1 Hz high-power laser pulses to this low-power kilohertz pulse train, opening a promising path to fast non-perturbative feedback concepts even on few-hertz-class high-power laser systems.

This Element describes for the first time the database of peer review reports at PLOS ONE, the largest scientific journal in the world, to which the authors had unique access. Specifically, this Element presents the background contexts and histories of peer review, the data-handling sensitivities of this type of research, the typical properties of reports in the journal to which the authors had access, a taxonomy of the reports, and their sentiment arcs. This unique work thereby yields a compelling and unprecedented set of insights into the evolving state of peer review in the twenty-first century, at a crucial political moment for the transformation of science. It also, though, presents a study in radicalism and the ways in which PLOS's vision for science can be said to have effected change in the ultra-conservative contemporary university. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Summary
Introduction
It is particularly vital that non-economists have access to a clear view of economic thinking on the general matter of philanthropy.
A casual thought about traditional mainstream economics might suggest that, as the ‘dismal science’, it would have little to say about ostensibly non self-directed behaviour. I will explore the extent to which this is true. In the last twenty years or so, there has been an increasing amount of economic work that acknowledges social formations – see Ostrom (2000) – and looks at psychological aspects of individual choice. This widening has become even more extended recently in the form of neuroeconomics and ‘nudge economics’
Detailed interest in philanthropy is comparatively recent in economics – mainly in the last thirty years or so. The view most consistent with the traditional core of economic theory is the fundamentally selfish one in which giving to others (in whatever form) is only carried out as a source of instrumental utility to the donor. Cunningham showed in Chapter 1 the animosity of political economists to charity and philanthropy. They believed that the rate of wages should be determined by the market and market only, therefore ‘charity's meddling interfered with that.’
For the economist, giving becomes a commodity which is traded off against other more conventional commodities. Some economists attempt to give this a more rigorous foundation by rooting the degree of philanthropy in sociobiology. But this is still a fundamentally selfish approach, even though textbook accounts such as Frank (2008, p212) call the person who is donating ‘non-egoistic’. Particularly worrying is the tendency that some economists have to bandy about the word ‘natural’ in an ill-considered way. For example, the short paper by Scharf (2012), an economist who seems strongly supportive of prosocial behaviour, describes the work of Benabou and Tirole (2006) as assuming that individuals are ‘naturally greedy’. Ideas that individuals are naturally weak in prosociality might lead to the proposal that some intervention is needed by government, independent charities and corporations. Thus social justice cannot be attained by individual initiative alone in the framework of a market economy. New philanthropy can be seen as a challenge to the ‘natural greediness’ thesis as we see incredibly rich people not just giving but driving others to do so.

The yttrium-based metal–organic framework, Y(btc) (btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate), shows moderate uptake of methane (0.623 mmol g−1) and molecular oxygen (0.183 mmol g−1) at 1 bar and 308 K. Neutron powder-diffraction data for the guest-free, CD4-, and O2-loaded framework reveal multiple adsorption sites for each gas. Both molecular guests exhibit interactions with the host framework characterised by distances between the framework and guest atoms that range from 2.83 to 4.81 Å, with these distances identifying interaction most commonly between the guest molecule and the carboxylate functional groups of the benzenetricarboxylate bridging ligand of the host.

It is not uncommon for the invading economist to arrive at radically different conclusions in areas of social inquiry, hitherto left to specialists from other fields. For example, before the arrival of Chicagoan economics, the received wisdom in the criminological field was that deterrent punishments (especially capital punishment) did not work. In this paper, we attend to the simple question: ‘Is religion a beneficial influence on the health of individuals?’ This has not hitherto attracted much attention from economists. However, epidemiological studies have overwhelmingly concluded that the answer to the above question is ‘yes'. In the context of a simple two equation recursive set up, this paper provides sharply contrasting evidence of there being no relationship between the two variables except where an arbitrary five point measure of subjective health status is used. Although the relationship in this case is negative in accordance with the received wisdom, its magnitude is so small that it may be dismissed as inconsequential for reasons discussed in the main body of the paper. This paper deals solely with physical health unlike some of the prior research which also investigates mental health status.

Recrystallization of silicon-on-insulator (SOI) films using a line-source electron beam is described. This unique heat source can continuously emit several kilowatts of - 5 keV electrons into a beam 150 mm in length and - 2.5 mm in width, an exposure area which allows processing of 100 mm substrates in a single pass. An attractive aspect of this beam is the ability to control the beam profile, which in turn allows one to influence the thermal gradients present during recrystallization. Using a tightly focussed beam to recrystallize the SOI layer results in a film whose physical properties are generally attributed to films grown with a high thermal gradient at the solidifying liquid-solid interface (highly branched subboundaries with a maximum spacing of - 20 microns and several degrees of angular mismatch.) By reducing the gradient at the growth interface it is possible to achieve unbranched sub-boundaries with over 70 micron spacing and less than 0.5 degrees of out-of-plane tilt misalignment.
